Summer Walker’s Debut Album ‘Over It’: Reviving R&B One Track At A Time

Summer Walker is making waves in the R&B world and she’s definitely here to stay!

From the first moment her voice came through the speakers, I instantly knew she would be a big deal. Her sound is real and raw. I listened to her music before I saw her face. Once I saw her, it solidified who she was, not only as an artist but as a being. With her colorful hair, face tattoos and full-bodied lyrics, it’s evident that Summer Walker strums to the notes of her own guitar.

The Beginning

If I can recall when her career really started to pick up traction, I’d say it was the song ‘Girls Need Love’. That song empowered so many women to say exactly what they wanted. Often times we feel that we can’t be as frank. Summer gave us a song to vibe to and be in control of expressing our wants and needs. After Drake hopped on the remix, things really started to move. There was a great deal of excitement surrounding her EP titled ” Last Day of Summer” but no one was prepared for what was to come.

90’s Feels

So let’s get into this album shall we? This debut album gives off the most unfiltered, sultry vibe ever. Summer sampled the nostalgic tune “Get It Together” by 702 on her song ‘Body’. That’s one of the best bops on the album. But it wouldn’t be right if we didn’t highlight my favorite track ‘Come Thru’ inspired by Usher’s “You Make Me Wanna” FEATURING USHER! How epic can it get? There aren’t many artists today that can successfully sample a 90’s classic and then get the original artist to record a verse on it. Other artists featured on the album include 6lack, Bryson Tiller, Jhene Aiko, and the very low key PartyNextDoor.

For The Love of Summer

Overall, this piece of work tells a story about love and all it’s obstacles. One of the best parts about music is when the listener can relate to what the artist is saying. This album depicted the perfect emotional roller coaster of love and relationships. Ironically, ‘Over It’ was produced by Summer Walker’s present day lover and old friend, producer London On Da Track. It’s safe to say they made some magic in the midst of the love they found within each other. Whether you’re laying in bed thinking about your estranged ex, going through the ups and downs with bae, or glad you just dodged a bullet, ‘Over It’ can be put on repeatĀ  no matter what your love story may be.
